Sania Mirza and her Australian partner Anastasia Rodionova were upset 3-6, 2-6 by the German-Chinese pair of Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Shuai Zhang in the first round of the Madrid Open.

Madrid: Sania Mirza and Anastasia Rodionova suffered an upset first round exit at the Madrid Open, a premier WTA event, after losing to Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Shuai Zhang here. Sania was defending 250 points here and for that she needed to reach at least the quarterfinals. Sania and Rodionova lost the match under an hour as they failed to convert five breakpoints and lost their serve six times. PTI
