Taking part in the deliberations, he said that from 2007 till date the state government had sanctioned about Rs 23 crore as financial assistance under state illness fund for treatment of 2,020 cancer patients in the state, however, a large number of cases in the state go unreported, he quoted Badal as saying.

Highlighting that a cancer awareness drive was the need of the hour, the chief minister called upon private medical colleges, big private hospitals and non-government organisations (NGOs) to work in unison with the government, by choosing particular areas for detection and treatment of cancer patients, the spokesman added.

The chief minister said he would also take up the matter of providing cancer medicines at a cheaper rate with the Centre.
