Philippine journalist gunned down for being critical of corruption

ILIGAN: Philippine police say a gunman has killed a popular radio commentator known for being critical of alleged corruption and rising crime in a southern city. Police chief Cristeto Rey Gonzalodo of Iligan City says Fernando Solijon was shot multiple times late Thursday as he was about to get into his car after having drinks with colleagues at a friend’s house. AP[/caption] He says the gunman then fled aboard a motorcycle driven by another man. Solijon, 48, died on the way to a hospital. The National Union of Journalists in the Philippines says Solijon would be the 159th journalist killed in the country since 1986 if an investigation shows the attack was related to his job. The group says most of the slayings have remained unsolved. AP
