No breaks while working can increase risk of blood clots

London: Workaholics beware! If you have lunch at your desk and take no breaks while working, it might double your risk of forming blood clots! According to a new study, nearly 75 percent of office staff aged 21-30, working for 10 hours everyday, do not get up to take a break – doubling the chances of them getting deep vein thrombosis (DVT), The Mirror reported. It mainly affects the large veins in the lower leg and thigh and can be fatal if it moves to the lungs. The study by UK-based research consultancy, ComRes found that 73 percent office workers admitted to taking lunch at their desk. “We believe there are 60,000 DVT cases a year throughout the UK. The scariest part is that 80 percent have no signs at all, no swelling, redness or pain. We call it the silent killer,” DVT charity Lifeblood’s Annya Stephens-Boal said. Experts believe the best way to avoid DVT is to keep mobile, lose excess weight, give up smoking and eat a low salt and low fat diet. PTI
