Shillong: Meghalaya has submitted documents to the Assam government to substantiate its claims on twelve disputed border areas, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma told the assembly today. “We are waiting for the response from Assam government on the matter,” Sangma said. “We have been able to build up a strong case and our stand is that we are clear with our boundaries,” he said.[caption id=“attachment_1160581” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]

He said that both the states however had reached an agreement to maintain status quo on issues relating to developmental activities in the disputed areas. Talks on the border at the level of the chief secretaries were expected to resume soon, he said. The chief minister made the statements while he was replying to supplementary queries raised by opposition leaders on the alleged atrocities and harassment of the people in the border areas. The chief minister said his government had sought central assistance in upgradation and establishment of new police stations along the inter-state border with Assam to maintain peace. On this issue, he said, the Centre had earlier asked the state government to submit proposals on both militancy infested areas and inter-state border areas. PTI
