Meet on rising crime against women in Bengal Feb 23

Kolkata, Feb 20 (IANS) Blaming West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee government for the rise in rape cases in the state, a coordination body of Left-affiliated women’s organisations in the state Thursday said they would hold a convention in the city Feb 23 on the issue.

Nari Swadhikar Samanway (Coordination Committee of Women’s Rights), that includes representatives of parties like the Communist Party of India-Marxist, Communist Party of India, Revolutionary Socialist Party and the All India Forward bloc, demanded the government take immediate steps to stop the atrocities.

“The number of crimes against women is constantly on the rise. The state government’s habit of denying such incidents when they are first reported are encouraging the culprits, as they feel they can get away by committing such crimes,” All India Democratic Women’s Association state secretary Minato Ghosh told mediapersons here.

The AIDWA, the women’s arm of the CPI-M, is a member of the committee.

“We demand the state government take action against all culprits, irrespective of their party affiliations. The inaction on the part of the state government and the involvement of lower level functionaries of the ruling Trinamool Congress has only resulted in the worsening of the situation,” said Ghosh.

A convention would be held Feb 23 at the Audio-Visual Hall near the Zoological Gardens on the matter. A number of eminent persons and democratic and progressive bodies have been invited for the event.
