Karnataka ranks ninth in population among all states: PCA

Bangalore: Karnataka with a population of over 6.10 crore occupies ninth position in population size among all states and union territories and accounts for 5.05 percent of country’s population of 121 crore in 2011, as per the Primary Census Abstract (PCA) of 2011. Of the 6,10,95,297 persons enumerated in the state, 3,09,66,657 are males and 3,01,28,640 females, Director Census Operations Karnataka, T K Anil Kumar said releasing the first set of final data from the population exercise held in February 2011 in Bangalore on Thursday. The most populated district is Bangalore with 96.22 lakh and accounts for 15.75 percent of the state’s total population, while Kodagu is the least populated district with a population share of 0.91 percent. AFP](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/child_meal_AFP.jpg) In nine districts, the proportion of child population to total population is less than 10 percent. AFP[/caption] The state has also been witnessing constant increase in the Effective Literacy Rate (ELR) over the past decades. In continuation of the trend, ELR of the state increased from 66.64 percent in 2001 to 75.36 percent in 2011 as per the Primary Census Data (PCA) of 2011. While male literacy increased from 76.10 percent to 82.47 percent, female literacy has increased from 56.87 percent to 68.08 percent. The increase in female literacy rate by 11.21 percentage points against the male literacy rate increase of 6.37 percentage points has substantially narrowed the gap between male and female literacy rates, he said. ELR has been defined as the percentage of total number of literates among the population aged seven years and above. Among districts, Dakshina Kannada with an overall literacy rate of 88.57 percent retains the top position closely followed by Bangalore district (87.67 percent) and Udupi District (86.24 percent). The lowest overall literacy rate of 51.83 percent is recorded in the newly created Yadgir district, preceded by Raichur district which has recorded 59.56 percent. Apart from these two districts, all the remaining 28 districts have registered more than 60 percent literacy rates. As against 1,04,01,918 households in the 2001 census, the state has 1,33,57,027 households as per 2011 census. The number of households has registered a decadal growth rate of 28.41 percent. Bangalore district tops the list with a decadal growth of 63.88 percent in the number of households. Kodagu district (9.69 percent) lies at the bottom spot. The proportion of child population (in the age group 0-6 years) in the state has decreased from 13.59 percent to 11.72 percent. Among the districts, Yadgir district with 16.20 percent has the highest proportion of child population component in its total population followed by Raichur district (14.71 percent). Udupi district with 8.76 percent has the least proportion of child population component in its total population preceded by Chikmagalur district (9.26 per cent). In nine districts, the proportion of child population to total population is less than 10 percent. It is between 10 to 15 percent in 20 districts and the proportion is more than 15 percent only in Yadgir district. The child sex ratio in the age group 0-6 years in Karnataka has registered a nominal increase of two points from 946 in 2001 to 948 in 2011. PTI
