New Delhi: The government today expressed concern over recent incidents of alleged discrimination and crime against students from North-East in campuses and asked the institutes to provide “an inclusive and harmonious platform” to them.[caption id=“attachment_296225” align=“alignleft” width=“380” caption=“Expressing concern. [/caption] HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, while expressing his concern, said educational institutions should rise to the occasion to provide an “inclusive and harmonious platform for students from across the country to come together and pursue studies”. Accroding to officials in the HRD ministry, Sibal had last month requested UGC to formulate regulations to prevent discrimination in higher educational institutions. The UGC in its meeting on 2 April also deliberated on a set of regulations and finalised them. They included establishment of ombudsman in every institutes who would have the power to hear complaints of discrimination. Manipuri boy Richard Loitam was found dead, allegedly murdered in his hostel in Bangalore’s NRV School of Architecture last week, an incident which had sparked protests. A few days later, Dana Sangma, a Meghalaya student, was found hanging in her hostel room of Gurgaon’s Amity Business School. PTI
