Gogoi rubbishes AGP, BJP claims on development

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today dubbed as “propaganda overdrive” opposition AGP’s claim that the Congress-led government was reaping the success of development carried out by earlier regimes in the state. “The AGP, having realised that its political clout was on the downhill slide, primarily because of its gross inertness and abject inefficiency, is now hell bent on a propaganda overdrive against the Congress government with an eye on the coming Lok Sabha polls,” Gogoi said in a statement in Guwahati.[caption id=“attachment_1162723” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]  Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. AFP[/caption] Stating that the people were politically conscious not to fall prey to it, the Chief Minister said the party came to power twice, but dashed their hopes then totally betrayed their trust. Terming a statement by Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) general secretary Durgadas Boro as ‘malicious and politically motivated’, Gogoi said, “the beleaguered AGP is trying to cover up its dismal failure on all fronts when they were in power.” The chief minister termed AGP rule as the darkest chapter in the history of Assam during which the secret killing of family members of leaders and cadres of the Ulfa occurred. Gogoi claimed that his government inherited an empty exchequer from the erstwhile AGP regime in 1991 and built its economic strength on fiscal reforms. He also criticised the BJP for doing nothing for the development of Assam. “It has suddenly developed a soft corner for the people of the state. But while they were in power at the Centre, they meted out a step-motherly treatment toward the state,” he said. The chief minister alleged that the party was spreading canards against the Congress government. “But it will not bear any fruit. The BJP will have to face the music at the coming hustings,” Gogoi said. PTI
