Chanderpaul, Ramdin score big before WI declare at 527

Shivnarine Chanderpaul equaled a career-high unbeaten 203 and Dinesh Ramdin posted a century before the West Indies declared at 527 for four Wednesday, just minutes before the tea break on day two of the first cricket test against Bangladesh. The West Indies resumed at 361-4 on Wednesday and didn’t lose a wicket while adding 166 runs in almost two full sessions. It was Chanderpaul’s second double-century in test cricket, equaling the 203 he scored against South Africa in 2005. The 38-year-old Chanderpaul bent his knees and kissed the ground after he reached his double century off 367 balls that included 22 boundaries amid congratulations by his teammates from beyond the boundary ropes. After taking three wickets on the first day, rookie offspinner Sohag Gazi was unable to make another breakthrough as bowling figures blew out to 3-145 at the declaration. On Tuesday, Kieran Powell scored 117 to help set the foundation for a big West Indies total. His century was the second in his 12th test. Also on Tuesday, Gazi removed opener Gayle for 24 and Bravo for 14 in his first 11 test overs after West Indies skipper Darren Sammy won the toss. Chanderpaul, playing his 145th test match, equaled Garfield Sobers for second on West Indies’ list of century-makers with his 26th hundred. Bangladesh has won just three tests from 73 matches since gaining full ICC status. Its last test series was nearly 11 months ago when it was comfortably beaten 2-0 at home by Pakistan. AP
