Itanagar: Expressing concern on the arbitrary enhancement of air fares, especially with reference to the sectors connecting the North Eastern Region (NER) to rest of the country, Lok Sabha member Takam Sanjoy has sought intervention of the Union civil aviation ministry. In a letter to Union Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh, Sanjoy pleaded for introduction of an “effective mechanism” to regulate air fares for domestic travel with special emphasis to the sectors of the NER, official sources said in Itanagar today.[caption id=“attachment_868987” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] High airfares. Reuters[/caption] The MP said that the sudden spurt in air fares comes at a time when there was a huge flow of students from the region to different parts of the country for admission purposes. “This has made students as well as regular commuters including patients, professionals, government officials, tourists shell out unrealistically large amounts of money to facilitate domestic travel,” he pointed out. “I seek your urgent intervention to check this phenomenon by introducing an effective and transparent mechanism to regulate air fares for domestic travel", he said. Sanjoy said the price structure (air fares) should be devised in such a manner so as to safeguard the overall interests of all the stakeholders including those of the NER, sources added. PTI
