New Delhi: The revenue earned by the Airports Authority of India, in the joint ventures, at the Delhi and Mumbai airports has increased by around 100 percent in last five years, the government said today.

“The AAI received Rs 277 crore and Rs 233 crore from the joint venture companies Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) and Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) in 2006-07. The revenue earned by AAI in 2010-11 was Rs 582 crore from DIAL and Rs 464 crore from MIAL,” Civil Aviation Minister Valayar Ravi said in a written reply in Lok Sabha.

In 2007-08, AAI earned Rs 408 crore and Rs 337 crore, Rs 446 crore and Rs 375 crore in 2008-09 and Rs 544 crore and Rs 397 crore from DIAL and MIAL respectively, he said.

Earlier, in its report, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) had said that AAI could have earned an additional 24 percent revenue from the DIAL had it managed its contract with the private-led operator more effectively.

It recommended amendments to the provisions of the OMDA to include penalty clauses for protecting the interests of the AAI against delayed payments by DIAL.

Terming the revenue sharing model between DIAL and AAI as “defective”, the government audit body found that AAI’s receivable annual fee saw a “substantial reduction”.

Also, the AAI, which runs 125 airports across the country, had expressed its desire to raise Rs 5,000 crore through infrastructure bonds to fund the next phase of development of 15 airports during the 12th Plan period.

AAI had in 2009 had asked the government to raise a similar amount through tax-free infrastructure bonds to develop 35 non-metro airports but was rejected by the government then.
