In a significant development, the Bombay High Court has overturned a Family Court’s decision and granted Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and his estranged wife, Dhanashree Verma, a fast-tracked divorce by waiving the mandatory cooling-off period. The Bombay High Court has reportedly permitted the couple to bypass the mandatory six-month cooling-off period following their divorce.
Bombay High Court grants fast-tracked divorce to Chahal and Dhanashree
As per Bar and Bench, a bench led by Justice Madhav Jamdar directed the Family Court to finalise the divorce proceedings by tomorrow, considering Chahal’s participation in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. The couple, who tied the knot in December 2020, had been living separately since 2022 . Their divorce petition was filed before the Family Court in Bandra on 5 February 2025, along with an application seeking the waiver of the cooling-off period under the Hindu Marriage Act.
On 20 February, the Family Court refused to grant the waiver, citing partial compliance with the consent terms agreed upon by both parties. As per the agreement, Chahal was to reportedly pay a permanent alimony of Rs 4.75 crore to Verma, of which Rs 2.37 crore had already been paid. The pending amount led to the court’s conclusion that the consent terms were not fully met.
However, the Bombay High Court noted that the couple had been separated for over two and a half years and emphasised that the consent terms allowed for the payment of the remaining amount after the decree was passed. Acknowledging this, the High Court overruled the Family Court’s decision, effectively expediting the divorce process.
The ruling comes at a crucial time for Chahal, who is set to participate in the upcoming IPL 2025 season. He will represent the Punjab Kings franchise in the tournament after being bought for a whopping Rs 18 crore at the auctions last year. In the 2024 season, Chahal played for Rajasthan Royals, where he picked up 18 wickets in 15 matches. He also became the first bowler to take 200 IPL career wickets, becoming the top wicket-taker in the league’s history.
