Why is the case important?

Betting and gambling on sports is illegal in India. The government banned real-money online games recently. Apps like 1xBet were banned way back in 2023 but they continued to operate from abroad via their websites, targetting Indian users.

According to investigators, these platforms have allegedly cheated people of large amounts of money and also avoided paying taxes. The ED has started a probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) because of this.

What happened with Yuvraj Singh?

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh appeared before the ED in Delhi on September 23. He was questioned for several hours and his statement was recorded. The investigators mainly wanted to know about his association with the betting company and how he was contacted, whether he signed any contracts, how payments were made, and if he knew that online betting is illegal in India.

Who else has been questioned?

Before Yuvraj, the ED had already questioned other cricketers like Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan, and Robin Uthappa. Apart from cricketers, actors like Mimi Chakraborty, Ankush Hazra, and Sonu Sood have also come under the scanner. More celebrities, influencers, and sportspersons are expected to be called in the coming days.

What is ED looking for?

The ED is focusing on a few key points, including how celebrities were approached by 1xBet, who was their main contact person in India, whether money was paid in cash or through bank transfers, if payments were made in India or abroad, and how the money was used later and whether it can be seen as “proceeds of crime.”

The ED has also asked celebrities to share copies of their contracts and all emails or paperwork related to 1xBet promotions.

What happens next?

If the ED finds strong evidence, it can attach assets linked to the case, including properties. A chargesheet will then be filed in the court and strong action could be taken against these big names.
