Yashasvi Jaiswal set to lose gully fielding spot, undergoes special session with Gautam Gambhir: Report

Yashasvi Jaiswal is reportedly set to lose his fielding spot at the fourth slip-gully position after a disastrous performance in the Headingley Test against England, where he dropped four catches in the match. Besides poor bowling from the pacers and Ravindra Jadeja, who failed to provide the much-needed support to Jasprit Bumrah, the dropped catches were the biggest reason behind India’s defeat.

The Indian cricket team dropped as many as seven catches in the Headingley Test at Leeds as they went on to lose by five wickets despite being in the winning position in the first match of the ongoing five-match series. Jaiswal was the poorest fielder of all, dropping four catches alone, three in gully-fourth slip position.

It seems the Team India management has decided to address the issue by removing him from that particular fielding spot. On Monday, Jaiswal was missing from the slip and gully cordon as the team prepared for the Edgbaston Test, starting on 2 July in Birmingham.

As per RevSportz, Sai Sudharsan and Nitish Kumar Reddy were tried out in the fourth slip-gully position, while Karun Nair was at first slip, KL Rahul at second and captain Shubman Gill at third.

As for Jaiswal, he underwent a special individual session with head coach Gautam Gambhir and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate. For nearly 15 minutes, he practiced taking flat catches, with the intensity and angles suggesting he’s being prepared to field at silly point or forward short leg in the upcoming match.

This also gives an idea that all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy could come back to Team India’s playing XI in place of Shardul Thakur. In his debut series in Australia, Nitish Kumar scored 298 runs, including a hundred and also took five wickets.

Thakur had a poor Test match at Headingley, scoring just five runs and taking two wickets.

There are also hints that Sudharsan would continue to play at No.3, despite scoring just 30 runs on debut.

The biggest concern for India, however, is who replaces Jasprit Bumrah in case he doesn’t play in Birmingham. India are already 1-0 down in the series, but there’s a need to manage Bumrah’s workload carefully.

Pacers Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh are expected to play in the second Test against England.
