WTC Final Live Score Day 4, SA vs AUS: Aiden Markram is the Player of the Final for his magnificent 136 at the 'Home of Cricket'!

“Haven’t scored more important runs. Weird how things worked out after a duck in the first innings. Need a bit of luck, glad things worked out. Reception will stick out. Lord’s is the place everyone wants to play. Plenty of South African fans who’ve made through, one of the most special days. It’s always one side of the sword to absorb, but when you look at the wicket and quality of the bowling, you have x amount of balls to face and have to be proactive. Lyon’s one of the best, have had plenty of banter, if this went to day five and it kept spinning, he’d have been a handful. (Asking Temba to stay during injury) To be honest, a lot of it came from him. He’s led us from the front for the last two-three years. He wasn’t going anywhere, played an innings lot of people will remember,” says Markram, who was dismissed with South Africa a hit away from victory.

WTC Final Live Score Day 4, SA vs AUS: An emotional Keshav Maharaj speaks to former Proteas captain Graeme Smith after the historic victory!

“It’s special, it’s an honour to lift the cup for everyone out here and back home. It’s what the country’s about, the unity among everyone in the last five days. We’re very grateful, as a team as a nation, as a proud country. I think the emotions would’ve spurred me into the right direction had I got into bat. Thanks to everyone who’s been supporting us, through adversity we’ve stood strong. We honour those who’ve come before us, may this be a stepping stone for greater things to come,” says the left-arm spinner.

WTC Final Live Score Day 4, SA vs AUS: David Bedingham and Kyle Verreynne speak to Kevin Pietersen after guiding the Proteas home!

“I am just relieved. I was watching in the morning and kept thinking I don’t want to bat, I don’t want to bat. When I walked in the middle, I was the most nervous I have ever been,” says Verreynne, who hit the winning boundary.

“Amazing. Very nervous, but the way Aiden and Temba went about made us calm. Thank goodness we got over the line. The sun plays a massive factor, we got luckier of the conditions. It’s been 27 years and I am so thankful we got over the line,” says Bedingham.

WTC Final Live Score Day 4, SA vs AUS: Pat Cummins faces criticism from Matthew Hayden for defensive captaincy

Australian legend Matthew Hayden is not happy with how Cummins opted for defensive, spread out fielding when Markram and Bavuma were batting on Day 3. The South African pair added 143 runs together and remained unbeaten.

“You know, this defensive effort here from Australia, it was all about how they were going to take wickets and how they were going to do that early,” Hayden said after Day 3. “You know, when they got through to Mulder, they got through Rickelton, and they had to put at that point pressure on Bavuma. They had to put those catching cover areas, had to be less defensive, more attacking. Can you imagine if those first couple of balls had been chipped up? South Africa now it’s three down. Australia got control of the match. So for me, that was a trick.

“The drifting of the nature of the game just allowed the rotation of strike, allowed that partnership to grow and build in confidence, and it just got away from the Australian bowling lineup. Yes, it’s flat conditions, but you must take 10 wickets to defend the World Test Championship. You must take the top three out of play,” he added.

WTC Final Live Score Day 4, SA vs AUS: South Africa on verge on historic win against Australia

South Africa should ideally win their first world title in cricket today unless something major happens. They are only 69 runs away from winning the WTC final at Lord’s. They still have eight wickets in hand. We will bring you all the latest from the WTC final. Follow our LIVE blog.

WTC Final Live Score: South Africa are on the verge of clinching their first world title in cricket as they need just 69 runs more to win the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord’s against Australia. Chasing 282 for win, South Africa ended Day 3 on 213/2 with Aiden Markram hitting unbeaten 2012, while skipper Temba Bavuma was on 65 not out despite struggling with a hamstring injury .

South Africa on brink of cricket history

South Africa’s biggest ever ICC trophy win is the inaugural Champions Trophy in 1998 and they have never won a World Cup or WTC final. But they now stand on the brink of history. They still have eight wickets in hand as conditions have improved drastically at Lord’s.

Australia, meanwhile, are hoping to become the first team to win back-to-back WTC finals, having beaten India in the summit clash in 2023. They will hope for quick early wickets in the first session on Day 4. However, for that they will need to have a more proactive approach rather than the defensive fielding setup they picked on Day 3 after Markram and Bavuma started to rotate the strike.
