Mumbai Indians started the bidding for Green despite the franchise having only Rs 2.75 crore in their kitty. The bidding war was soon taken over by Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders. Once Rajasthan Royals pulled out, the slugfest between Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings began.
Ultimately, KKR’s enormous purse helped them wrest Green for a record sum of Rs 25.20 crore, which is expected to be the highest in the ongoing auction in Abu Dhabi.
Green to get only Rs 18 crore
Despite fetching a massive sum, only bettered by Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant in IPL auction history, Green will only be taking home Rs 18 crore.

This is due to a rule change that came into effect ahead of last year’s mega auction. As per these rules, in a mini auction the salary of an overseas player is capped at the highest auction price at the big auction or the biggest retention slab, whichever is lower.
The highest price at the big auction last year was Rs 27 crore which Lucknow Super Giants shelled out for Pant. But the highest retention slab was of Rs 18 crore. Since Rs 18 crore is the lower of the two, Green’s salary in the season will be capped at that number.
