Andre Russell’s final match for West Indies ended on a sad note as Australia defeated the hosts by eight wickets in the second T20I on Tuesday, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

The day was supposed to be a grand farewell for one of West Indies’ most destructive all-rounders. Russell did his bit with a typical cameo, blasting 36 runs off just 15 balls with three sixes and four boundaries. But his effort wasn’t enough to stop a ruthless Australian chase led by Josh Inglis and Cameron Green.

“I’m very grateful to end my career here in front of my own crowd, family and friends. The result didn’t go my way, but I’m happy and thankful. I wish the boys all the very best moving forward,” Russell said after the match.

Both teams made a guard of honor for Russell as he walked onto the field before the match. The Australian players shook his hand and patted him on the back as he walked back to the pavilion after his innings ended.

Russell’s final wish goes unfulfilled

West Indies posted 172/8 after being asked to bat first. Brandon King gave the innings a solid start with 51 off 33 balls, and Russell’s late fireworks made it a respectable total. Russell shared his wish during the break, saying, “Just don’t want to finish on a losing note, that’s important to me and the West Indies.”

But that wish was denied as Australia’s reply was anchored by Inglis, who smashed an unbeaten 78 off just 33 balls. He hit five sixes and tore apart the West Indies bowlers with ease. Green scored a calm 56 not out as Australia won with 28 balls remaining.

Russell has retired as one of the most feared finishers in T20 cricket. He will continue to play league cricket around the world.

The third T20I will be played in Basseterre on Saturday, July 26. Australia will look to seal the series with a whitewash, while West Indies will be eager to finish on a positive note.
