How Vaibhav’s father and mother shaped his journey

Vaibhav’s coach, Manish Ojha, revealed in an interview with Cricketnext how much hard work went into building the young star.

“Vaibhav came to me when he was around nine years old. The distance from his native Samastipur to Patna is around 100 km, and he used to come to my coaching center every alternate day. Vaibhav used to start training around 7:30 am and continued till the evening, before travelling back home. He has followed this schedule for over four years,” Ojha shared.

Ojha gave a lot of credit to Vaibhav’s parents for his success. “Vaibhav kept on getting fame in Bihar, but his parents have played a huge role. His mother woke up early at 4 am and prepared food for Vaibhav. His father accompanied him to trainings and matches. We did contribute as coaches, but his parents are the driving forces,” he said.

Vaibhav’s journey is also the story of a father, Sanjiv, who lives his dream through his son. “Vaibhav and his father had long ago made up their minds that the kid will play cricket. The father wanted to play cricket, but he couldn’t. So, he tried to live his dream through his son,” Ojha revealed.

They have also made numerous sacrifices to see Vaibhav make a mark in the IPL. His father reportedly sold off his farmland to support his son’s journey financially, while his mother would wake up at 4 am to prepare meals as Suryanvanshi focussed on his training.

Records broken by Vaibhav Suryavanshi

  • Youngest centurion in men’s T20 cricket history (at 14 years old)

  • Second-fastest century in IPL history (reached 100 in just 35 balls)

  • Joint-most sixes by an Indian in an IPL innings (11 sixes)

  • Highest boundary percentage in a T20 century (94 of his 101 runs came through boundaries)

Suryavanshi also scored 30 runs in Karim Janat’s first over, making it the most expensive first over ever bowled by any player in their IPL career. He smashed Janat for six consecutive boundaries, including three sixes and as many fours. His fearless batting helped RR chase down a big target of 210 runs in just 15.5 overs, winning the match by 8 wickets with 25 balls still left.
