Bangladeshi batting great Tamim Iqbal was rushed to a hospital in Dhaka on Monday after suffering a heart attack during a match. According to ESPNCricinfo, Tamim was playing a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Shinepukur Cricket Club in Savar near the Bangladeshi capital when the incident took place.

The former Bangladesh captain was leading Mohammedan SC and had fielded for just one over when he left the BKSP-3 ground after feeling discomfort in his chest, heading to the KPJ Specialized Hospital & Nursing College for consultations. Tamim was supposed to take an air ambulance to another hospital after the consultation, but couldn’t do so as his health gradually worsened.

The 36-year-old subsequently returned KPJ where he underwent emergency angioplasty after tests confirmed a blockage in his heart. An official bulletin from the hospital later confirmed that the medical procedure had “gone smoothly”.

“He returned to us in a critical condition. We can call it a heart attack, and we subsequently did an angiogram and angioplasty to remove the blockage. The medical procedure has gone smoothly. He is currently under observation. The swift coordination between the medical staff at BKSP and the hospital ensured Tamim was treated quickly,” read the official statement from the hospital.

The report added that several members of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), including president Faruque Ahmed, have visited the hospital where Tamim is admitted.

Tamim had announced his retirement from international cricket in January shortly before BCB unveiled Bangladesh’s squad for the Champions Trophy, signing off as one of Bangladesh’s greatest cricketers of all time with more than 15,000 runs across formats, including 8,357 runs from 243 ODI appearances.

The opener had previously made an emotional retirement announcement in July 2023 , three months before the ICC World Cup in India, only to reverse it following the intervention of then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
