There was plenty of debate over wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson’s demotion to the middle order in order to accommodate Shubman Gill at the top of the Indian batting order in last month’s Asia Cup. Especially since Samson had formed a successful pairing with Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order and their success as openers had played a major role in the Men in Blue’s red-hot run in Twenty20 Internationals over the last one year.
An explosive report, however, suggests that T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav was not on board with the decision to pair Gill with his Punjab teammate Abhishek at the top of the order at the expense of Samson getting pushed to the middle order.
Surya was unsure of Gill’s place in India’s current T20 plans
According to Cricblogger, ‘SKY’ had expressed doubts over Gill’s compatibility with India’s T20I plans and wasn’t entirely in favour of his inclusion. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee, however, defended Gill’s inclusion citing his consistency in the Indian Premier League as well as long-term value as an all-formats player.
The report adds that Surya was ultimately informed of Gill's inclusion in the squad just minutes before the announcement in August, but ultimately remained supportive of his inclusion on the public front.
Gill and Gambhir have already hit it off as a captain-coach pair in the Test format and the latter is believed to be a key supporter of star batter Gill leading India in all three formats down the road. Gill ended up scoring 127 runs at an average and strike rate of 21.16 and 151.19 respectively, with India going on to win the tournament by winning all seven matches that it played, including three against arch-rivals and eventual runners-up Pakistan.
After succeeding Rohit Sharma as Test captain, the 26-year-old has also taken over the role in the ODI format, making his captaincy debut in the 50-over format against Australia in Perth on Sunday.
