Sunil Gavaskar has taken a dig at current India head coach Gautam Gambhir while praising Shreyas Iyer for his captaincy in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Iyer, who led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL title last season, has also seen his current team Punjab Kings (PBKS), reach the playoffs this season .
With PBKS reaching the playoffs, Iyer has become the first captain to help three different teams reach the knockouts in the IPL. He has now done it with Delhi Capitals (DC), KKR and PBKS.
Gavaskar takes a jibe at Gambhir, praises Iyer
Hailing Iyer’s leadership skills, Gavaskar said that Iyer did not get credit for helping KKR win the IPL 2024 title despite being the leader on the ground.
“He did not get the credit for the IPL victory last season. All the plaudits were given to someone else. It is the captain who plays a major role in what is happening in the middle, not someone sitting in the dugout,” Gavaskar said Star Sports. “See, this year he’s getting fair credit. No one is giving all the credit to Ricky Ponting,” Gavaskar added.
Gambhir, who was KKR’s mentor last season, was seen as the main force behind Kolkata’s title win, while Iyer received very little praise.
However, one cannot deny that Ponting has proven to be a perfect foil for captain Iyer. Together, they helped DC reach their first final in 2020. Ponting was very certain he wanted Iyer as his captain once again, as PBKS launched a Rs 26.75 crore bid for the Indian batter in the IPL 2025 mega auction
Iyer has proven to be a great investment for the franchise, as under his captaincy, they have now reached the IPL playoffs after a gap of 11 years.
