Steve Smith has decided to retire from ODI cricket after Australia were knocked out of the Champions Trophy 2025. Australia lost in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy 2025 to India on Tuesday.

After Australia’s exit, Smith announced his ODI retirement on Wednesday. He hangs his boots after playing 170 ODIs. The 35-year-old will remain available for selection in Tests and T20Is.
As per reports, Smith informed his Australian teammates about his retirement from ODIs after the semi-final loss to India in Dubai.
Steve Smith: ‘Test cricket remains a priority’
In his statement, Smith said that his retirement would allow the selectors to start preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it,” Smith said in a release on Wednesday.
“There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey.
“Now is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup so it feels like the right time to make way.
“Test cricket remains a priority and I am really looking forward to the World Test Championship final, the West Indies in the winter and then England at home. I feel I still have a lot to contribute on that stage.”
Overall, in 70 ODIs, Smith scored 5800 at an average of 43.28 and with a strike rate of 86.96. He smahed 12 hundreds and 35 fifties and had a best score of 164.
