Yashasvi Jaiswal’s remarkable scoring in Test cricket continued as he brought up his double century in the post-lunch session on Day 4 of the third Test against England in Rajkot.
Jaiswal is third Indian batter, after Vinod Kambli and Virat Kohli, to hit successive double hundreds for the country. Kambli had scored 224 and 227 against England and Zimbabwe in 1992/93 while Kohli got 213 and 243 against Sri Lanka in 2017/18. Jaiswal has piled on double centuries in two of of seven innings in young career.
To highlight Jaiswal’s staggering batting, he converted all three of his 100s into 150-plus totals. He scored 171 vs West Indies in July last year before lapping up 209 against England in the second Test in Visakhapatnam and now an unbeaten 214.
The 22-year-old became the first left-handed Indian to score 500-plus runs in a Test series since Sourav Ganguly mustered 534 runs against Pakistan in 2007.
Jaiswal struck 12 sixes, with highlight of three-in-a-row off James Anderson, in a dominant show with the bat that was halted on Saturday by back spasms. He rejoined the crease after Shubman Gill was dismissed in disappointing fashion following a mix-up with Kuldeep Yadav. While Gill failed to stitch back-to-back centuries in consecutive Tests, Jaiswal broke through the England bowling attack with powerful batting throughout.
Jaiswal’s 12 sixes in the second innings equalled the record for most sixes by a batter in a Test innings. The dozen sixes drew him level with Pakistan’s Wasim Akram, who cracked 12 maximums against Zimbabwe in 1996.
