Yashasvi Jaiswal made history on Friday by becoming the youngest Indian batter to score 1,000 or more runs in a calendar year on Day 2 of the second Test between India and New Zealand in Pune. The opener achieved the milestone after dispatching Ajaz Patel for a boundary in the 22nd over of the Indian innings during the morning session.

Jaiswal achieved the feat at the age of 22 years and 302 days, breaking the record that was previously held by Dilip Vengsarkar, who had scored 1,000 Test runs in a year for the first time in 1979 at the age of 23.

As for the most Test runs scored by an Indian in a calendar year, Jaiswal needs to score another 556 runs in the remainder of the year to break Sachin Tendulkar’s record. The ‘Master Blaster’ had scored 1,562 runs in 14 matches in 2010.

Going back to the second Test against New Zealand, Jaiswal would depart shortly after bringing up the milestone getting caught at slip to depart for 30 and become the first of Glenn Phillips’ two wickets in Friday’s morning session.

At lunch on Day 2, India found themselves in deep trouble, reduced to 107/7 after 38 overs, still trailing New Zealand’s first innings score by another 152 runs and facing the prospect of conceding a huge first innings total.
