When D Hemalatha sustained a blow to her forehead while attempt a catch, Sayali Satghare was brought in her place and became the first concussion substitute in Women’s Premier League (WPL) history. With Hemalatha ruled out for Gujarat Giants’ fixture against Delhi Capitals, a change was needed which brought Satghare on the field.
Hemalatha suffered the injury while trying to take a catch at deep midwicket in the 15th over of Capitals’ innings. Batter Jess Jonassen heaved one across off Kathryn Bryce, but Hemalatha was unable to hold on to the catch and the ball burst through her hands to hit her. The team physio was immediately asked to tend to her. She remained out of the field for the rest of the match.
Later, Satghare was brought on as the replacement during Giants’ chase of 164. She replaced fast bowler Kashvee Gautam, who was picked up in the auction for a record Rs 2 crore.
Satghare, 23, is a seam-bowling allrounder who plays for Mumbai. She struck a century versus Arunachal in the Senior Women’s One Day Trophy last month and averaged 52 with the bat. She also picked up ten wickets in the competition.
Coming into the contest against the Capitals, Giants had lost three games in a row. In those three games, Hemalatha scored just 36 runs with a best of 31 not out against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
That winless streak continued with Delhi Capitals winning by 25 runs by the end of the night. With Meg Lanning scoring 55 runs and Jess Jonassen and Radha Yadav picking three wickets each, DC moved to top of the WPL standings.
