The second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), reportedly to be played in February 2024, will feature the same five teams as the first season: defending champions Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, UP Warriorz, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Gujarat Giants. Ahead of it, the teams will come together in a room to finalise their squads having retained 60 crickets. That means, 30 players will be up for grabs in the auction from a pool of 165 cricketers. Prominent names going into the WPL auction are: Veda Krishnamurthy, Priya Punia, Punam Raut, S Meghana, Devika Vaidya, Mannat Kashyap (India); Annabel Sutherland, Alana King, Kim Garth, Phoebe Litchfield (Australia); Tammy Beaumont, Danni Wyatt, Amy Jones, Kate Cross, Maia Bouchier (England); Shabnim Ismail, Nadine de Klerk (South Africa); Lea Tahuhu (New Zealand); Chamari Athapaththu (Sri Lanka); Deandra Dottin (West Indies); and Marufa Akter (Bangladesh). Wyatt may be a big buy at the auction especially after her explosive shot-making and scoring during the first T20I between India and England at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday. WPL Auction 2024: Format The 165 cricketers that have put their name in the bag to be picked at the auction include 104 Indians and 61 overseas cricketers, of whom 15 are from Associate Nations. Of the 165, only 56 have represented their country at some point. Deandra Dottin and Kim Garth have enlisted themselves at Rs. 50 lakh, the highest at this auction. Teams can have a squad of maximum 18 players but need to maintain a minimum of 15. At most six players can be foreigners. A playing XI, meanwhile, can consist of up to five overseas cricketer, of whom at least one has to be from an Associate Nation.
