We're heartbroken, it still hasn't sunk in and it won't for a while. My first World Cup was an experience that has taught me so much and made me grateful for everything that's come my way. Ravichandran Ashwin, the veteran all-rounder, said that India’s defeat to Australia was a “mighty heartbreak”.

Mighty mighty heartbreak last night💔 💔.

Everyone in the team had several days to remember during this campaign👌👌 and special mentions to @imVkohli @MdShami11 @ImRo45 and @Jaspritbumrah93 👏👏.

Shubman Gill said that the defeat still “hurts”.

Been almost 16 hours but still hurts like it did last night. Sometimes giving your everything isn’t enough. India’s wait for a major ICC trophy in 10 years extended even further following the loss, and the defeat was even more traumatic given that the Men in Blue had won all 10 matches leading upto the final. Having been put to bat by Australia, Rohit Sharma (47) got the hosts off to a fiery start before falling short of a fifty in the 10th over. Virat Kohli (54) and KL Rahul (66) steadied the ship with a allow 67-run stand, but the likes of Shreyas Iyer (4) and Shubman Gill (4) fell to big match pressure.

India were dismissed for 240, and even though Australia suffered initial hiccups in the chase to be restricted to 47/3, Travis Head (137) and Marnus Labuschagne (58*) forged a 192-run stand to eventually take Aussies to their sixth ODI World Cup title.
