World Cup 2023: Shubman Gill to miss India-Afghanistan match in Delhi

Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the Indian team for their upcoming 2023 ICC World Cup clash against Afghanistan. World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table The latest development was confirmed by the BCCI in a release shared on Monday, adding that Gill will be staying back in Chennai as a precautionary measure. “Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October. “He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team,” read the release from the BCCI.

Gill had reportedly contracted dengue in the build-up to the India-Australia fixture in Chennai, and failed to recover in time to make the XI, with Ishan Kishan taking up his spot at the top of the order. Kishan had a mixed day in office against the five-time world champions; while he was electric on the field and made a number of athletic saves, he was dismissed for a golden duck in the very first over of the chase. India got their campaign in the 13th edition of ICC’s showpiece event off to a winning start. Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja led the way with figures of 3/28 as the Men in Blue bowled Australia for 199 after the latter opted to bat. Rohit Sharma and Co however, were in deep trouble early on in their chase, getting reduced to 2/3 inside the first two overs with Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood inflicting early damage. Read | Team India school ill-prepared Aussies in unforgiving conditions Virat Kohli and KL Rahul then came to India’s rescue, forging a 165-run stand for the fourth wicket that not only pulled the Men in Blue out of trouble, but put them on the path to one of their more memorable wins in recent memory.
