World Cup 2023: India's top 10 run-getters and wicket-takers in the history of the tournament

World Cup 2023: India's top 10 run-getters and wicket-takers in the history of the tournament

The 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup will start in India on 5 October. The first match will see England take on New Zealand in what will be a repeat of the 2019 World Cup Final and it will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This iconic venue will also host the highly anticipated clash between India and Pakistan on 14 October. The two semifinal matches will be held on 15 November at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium and 16 November at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens. India go into this tournament as one of the favourites and the side would be keen to hit their stride early in the competition. Before the World Cup starts, let’s take a look at the top performers for India in the past editions. Top 10 run scorers for India in the World Cup: 1. Sachin Tendulkar leads the batting charts and is the leading run-scorer in the World Cup across all teams. He has scored 2,278 runs in 45 matches at an average of 56.95. He has scored six hundreds and 15 fifties. 2. Virat Kohli is second on the list as far as the Indian players are concerned. The right-hander has played in 26 matches and has scored 1,030 runs at an average of 46.81. 3. Sourav Ganguly comes in third with 1,006 runs in 21 matches at an average of 55.88. 4. Rohit Sharma, Current India captain, follows Sourav Ganguly. The right-hander has scored 978 runs in 17 matches at an average of 65.20. 5. Rahul Dravid is next on this list. The prolific batter was an integral member of the Indian side and scored 860 runs in 22 matches at an average of 61.42. 6. Virender Sehwag comes in next with 843 runs in 22 matches at an average of 38.31. He played a number of match-winning knocks in the World Cup for India. 7. Mohammed Azharuddin, who led India for the first time in the 1992 World Cup, follows Sehwag with 826 runs in 25 innings at an average of 39.33. 8. MS Dhoni, India’s 2011 World Cup-winning captain is 8th on this list. The wicketkeeper-batter scored 780 runs in 25 innings at an average of 43.33. 9. Yuvraj Singh, the player of the 2011 World Cup, follows MS Dhoni with 738 runs in 21 innings at an average of 52.71. 10. Kapil Dev, India’s 1983 World Cup-winning captain, completes the list of the top 10 India run scorers with 669 runs in 24 innings at an average of 37.16. We now take a look at the top 10 wicket-takers for India in the World Cup: 1. Zaheer Khan, who starred with the ball in the 2011 World Cup, leads the charts with 44 wickets in 23 matches at an average of 20.22. 2. Javagal Srinath, one of India’s leading fast bowlers, is second on the list with 44 wickets in 33 innings at an average of 27.81. 3. Mohammed Shami, who will be one of India’s key fast bowlers this World Cup, is third on the list with 31 wickets in 11 innings with an average of 15.70. 4. Anil Kumble, who played an important role in India’s World Cup squad till the 2007 World Cup, had picked up 31 wickets in 18 innings at an average of 22.83. 5. Kapil Dev, who led the way in the 1983 World Cup, is fifth on this list with 28 wickets in 25 innings. 6. Manoj Prabhakar was part of the Indian side from the 1987 to the 1996 World Cup and picked up 24 wickets in 18 innings at an average of 26.66. 7. Madan Lal, another key member of the Indian side, picked up 22 wickets in 11 innings at an average of 19.36. 8. Yuvraj Singh, who was the star all-rounder for India in the 2011 World Cup, picked up 20 wickets in 14 innings at an average of 23.10. 9. Harbhajan Singh was part of the Indian squad from 2003 till the 2011 World Cup and picked up 20 wickets in 20 innings at an average of 40.40. 10. Roger Binny, one of India’s key all-rounders in the 80s, picked up 19 wickets in 9 matches.
