India vs Sri Lanka Stats: Mohammed Shami becomes IND's top World Cup wicket-taker and more

Mohammed Shami, Virat Kohli, and India had a record-breaking night on Thursday as the Men in Blue became the first team to qualify for the World Cup 2023 semi-finals after a comprehensive 302-run win over Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. For India, it was their seventh consecutive win in the World Cup 2023 as they continued their unbeaten run. World Cup 2023:  News |  Schedule |  Results |  Points table On Thursday, India were asked to bat first by Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis, and Rohit Sharma and Co responded by making 357/8. Shubman Gill top-scored for India with 92 while Kohli and Shreyas Iyer smashed 88 and 82 respectively. Dilshan Madushanka took five wickets for 80. Sri Lanka’s reply was not even close to what was expected of them as India’s pacers swung and seamed the ball both ways. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Pathum Nissanka on the first ball before Mohammed Siraj took three quick wickets to reduce Sri Lanka ko 4/3. Shami then took five wickets and Ravindra Jadeja added another as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 55 in 19.4 overs.

With his five-wicket haul, Shami became the highest wicket-taker for India in ODI World Cups as he took over Zaheer Khan. Apart from this, multiple other records were made. Here’s a full list of records made during the India vs Sri Lanka match: 45: Mohammed Shami is now the highest wicket-taker for India in ODI World Cups with 45 wickets. Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath with 44 wickets were leading the table before Shami took the top spot. 4: This was the fourth fifer for Shami in ODIs which is the highest for India. Javagal Srinath and Harbhajan Singh with three fifers each are joint-second. 3: This was the third five-wicket haul for Shami in ODI World Cups which is the joint highest with Mitchell Starc. 2: Shami is only the second bowler in ODI history to take three consecutive four-wicket hauls. He did the same in the 2019 World Cup. Waqar Younis is the only bowler to do it more times - on three occasions. 8: Kohli’s knock of 88 helped him cross the 1000-run mark in ODIs in 2023. He is the only batter to score 1000 runs or more in ODIs in eight calendar years. Kohli broke the record of Sachin Tendulkar who scored 1000 ODI runs or more in seven calendar years. 106: Shreyas Iyer slammed a 106m six during his knock of 82 which is the biggest maximum so far in World Cup 2023. 55: Sri Lanka were bowled out for 55 by India which is the lowest total for a full-member nation in ODI World Cups. The previous lowest was 58 by Bangladesh against West Indies in 2011.
