World Cup 2023: It'd be nice to pile on England's misery, says David Warner

Australia opener David Warner said he’d be pleased to add to England’s misery at the Cricket World Cup in India. Australia and England, the Ashes rivals, meet in Ahmedabad on Saturday. World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table England are bottom of the 10-team points table with one win in six matches. The Jos Buttler-led defending champions have had far from a desirable campaign and their latest defeat came against India in Lucknow on Sunday. With World Cup semi-final chances next to none, Warner said he’d be wary of England given they’ve got little to lose now.

“It’d be nice,” the opener said to cricket.com.au when asked if he hopes to pile on England’s misery. “But they’re the teams that are the most dangerous when there’s nothing to lose. “They’ve got some very, very (high) quality players and we have to respect it. They bat to 11 and their bowling unit is very good.” Warner comes into the contest against England on the back of scores of 163, 104 and 81 runs and is the second-highest run scorer in the tournament - behind Quinton de Kock. Formidable stands with Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head at the top of the order have been crucial in Australia’s four-match winning run. “Everyone keeps writing me off,” said Warner. “I’m doing as well as I can, I’m just trying to go out there and start as well as I can up front in the first 10 (overs). If I get in, I try and make the most of it. “It’s also awesome to have Heady and Mitch there as well, because it allows that pressure to keep being put back onto the opposition. Asked if the so-called doubters were fuelling him, Warner said: “Nup. I just make everyone look stupid.”
