A day after left-arm quick Reece Topley was ruled out of the remainder of the 2023 ICC World Cup with a finger injury, England named Brydon Carse as his replacement in the squad. World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table The South African-born Carse is expected to link up with the squad in Bengaluru ahead of their next fixture, against Sri Lanka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, ESPNCricinfo reported. Carse has played 12 ODIs and three T20Is since making his debut in the 2021 home summer against Pakistan. The most recent of those appearances came in the three-ODI series against Ireland that was sandwiched between the New Zealand multi-format series and the World Cup, in which the bowling all-rounder was part of a second-string English side.
“He’s (Carse) a brilliant all-round package. He can score some handy runs for you, is very dynamic in the field and has a unique wicket-taking ability. He’s got that Stokes element to him where sometimes, you feel like nothing is happening and he’ll pick up wickets,” senior England batter Joe Root was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
Brydon Carse will replace Reece Topley in our World Cup squad for the remainder of the tournament.

Topley suffered a broken left index finger while trying to intercept the ball off a powerful shot by Rassie van der Dussen during England's meeting with South Africa in Mumbai on Saturday. The Surrey bowler suffered the injury during his fourth over, which he could not complete, requiring part-time offie Joe Root to bowl out the final delivery. Topley, who dismissed Quinton de Kock early in the South African innings, would return to the field later and would finish with three wickets to his name, though he also bled 88 runs in the process as the Proteas posted a mammoth 399/7 on the board. The Jos Buttler-led side then lost wickets from the outset of their chase, and were reduced to 100/8 at one stage before an attacking ninth-wicket stand between Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson helped reduce the margin of defeat — which at 229 runs still ended up being their heaviest-ever in ODIs. Read | England look like a side that has no confidence: Nasser Hussain The match came to an end after Atkinson became the ninth English batter to fall, with Topley unable to bat due to his finger injury. England, meanwhile, opted against including tearaway quick Jofra Archer in their squad as Topley’s replacement despite the Barbados-born pacer having travelled with the squad to India. Archer was part of the Eoin Morgan-led side that ended up winning their maiden ODI world title on home soil in 2019, and would be one of the standout performers in the subsequent Ashes. His career, however, has been derailed by injuries since, with Archer’s last competitive appearance coming in March during the tour of Bangladesh.
