West Indies vs South Africa preview, T20 World Cup 2024: Hosts West Indies lock horns against South Africa in a Group 2 match of the Super 8 stage in 2024 T20 World Cup in Antigua on Monday (Sunday night in Caribbean). Following England’s 10-wicket win over USA earlier on Sunday, this match is a virtual knockout, with the winner progressing whereas the loser will be eliminated.
England were the first team to qualify for the semi-finals following their thumping win over USA, and they are in first place in the standings with four points, albeit with an inferior NRR of +0.625. West Indies are in third place with two points and an NRR of +1.814, so for South Africa to qualify, they will have no option but to win.
On 21 June, the Proteas managed to beat England by seven runs in Grost Islet. For a large part this tournament, South Africa’s openers seemed to have struggled for consistency, but Quinton de Kock has found his rhythm back with the bat as he scored his second consecutive fifty of the T20 World Cup, against England. De Kock had scored 74 against USA in South Africa’s first Super 8 match.
Apart from de Kock, David Miller has been impactful with the bat but Heinrich Klaasen, who had a productive IPL season with Sunrisers Hyderabad, has not fired consistently despite a few good scores here and there.
For West Indies, in their latest match against USA, Shai Hope scored an unbeaten 82 so it remains to be seen if Kyle Mayers, who was brought into the squad as replacement for the injured Brandon King, would play. Otherwise, the Windies would be tempted to go ahead with the same lineup that beat USA.
