Bangladesh fielders have been far from their best in the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka. Drop catches have been a repetitive feature of the Test series, and there were even more blunders in the ongoing second Test in Chattogram. On Day two of the second Test on Sunday, Bangladesh’s slip fielders wasted a perfect and easy opportunity to get rid of Prabhath Jayasuriya.

Khaled Ahmed was the bowler and he bowled one outside the off-stump and while Prabath looked to play the cover drive, all he could manage was a thick outside edge that flew to the slip cordon. Najmul Hossain Shanto was fielding at first slip when he got both hands on the ball, but just could not grab that.

That eventually went flying to Shahadat Hossain at second slip, who looked to catch on the rebound but failed to do so. Zakir Hasan, the third slip fielder, also put up a diving effort only to fall short of the opportunity. Sri Lanka were 419/6 when Jayasuriya survived the scare. Jayasuriya scored 28 runs off 75 deliveries, including three fours. The visitors were eventually all out for 531 in the first innings.

On Day 1 of the Test, Bangladesh probably appealed for one of the worst DRS reviews. Taijul Islam was bowling to Kusal Mendis in the 44th over. The latter came up with a front foot defence in what seemed like it was completely bat. However, Najmul opted for a review, believing it to be lbw, but as  it turns out, that was an easy decision for the TV umpire after the ball hit the middle of Mendis’ bat.
