Protestors in Bangladesh set former cricket captain Mashrafe Morataza’s house on fire on Monday (August 5) as the unrest in the country gathered intensity . Amid the continued violence and chaos, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country .

Mortaza, a member of Parliament from the Narail-2 constituency in Khulna division, won his seat as an Awami League candidate led by Sheikh Hasina in the general elections in 2024.

The local media reported that the vandals attacked Mortaza’s house and set it on fire after the PM left the country following widespread student protests.

In his cricket career, Mortaza led Bangladesh in 117 matches. He took 390 international wickets and scored 2,955 runs in 36 Tests, 220 ODIs, and 54 T20Is.

Following his retirement, Morataza joined the Awami League in 2018 and was elected as an MP.

The impact of the violence and unrest is being felt on cricket as well. ICC are closely monitoring the situation and may be forced to shift the Women’s T20 World Cup , scheduled for October.

The violence in Bangladesh has not ceased even after Hasina’s exit. A mob rushed into the Sherpur District Jail during the curfew, broke the main doors and set the facility on fire.

Apart from vandalising the jail complex and freeing over 500 inmates, weapons and valuables were also stolen.

With Hasina not in power, Bangladesh will be ruled by a caretaker government helmed by the military.
