Virat Kohli wins ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year award after stellar 2023

Senior India batter Virat Kohli was on Thursday announced the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year following a stellar 2023 where he roared back to form and broke several records,  most notably Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries. This is for the fourth time that Kohli has won the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year award. The Delhi-born cricketer has won it in 2012, 2017 and 2018. As a result, Kohli has become the first-ever cricketer to win this award four times.

Kohli had finished the year with 1377 runs from 27 ODIs at an average of 72.47, while amassing six centuries. He would also go onto amass 765 runs in India’s World Cup campaign on home soil, where the Men in Blue finished runners-up after losing to Australia in the final in Ahmedabad. Overall, across formats, Kohli went onto amass 2048 runs from 36 innings last year. It was in the ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand when Kohli surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 centuries with his 50th century in the format. The 765 runs that he scored in the World Cup is also the most by a batter in a single edition, with the previous record also held by Tendulkar (673 runs).
