India still have a mountain to climb in the ongoing first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru despite producing a much better display with the bat after getting bundled out for a mere 46 on the second day at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. India were 231/3 at stumps on Day 3, with Virat Kohli getting dismissed for 70 off Glenn Phillips’ bowling in the final delivery of the day. And yet, they trailed the Black Caps by 125 runs, thanks to New Zealand posting 402 in their first innings in response to the home team’s sub-50 total.

India were off to a strong start with the ball on Friday, reducing the visitors to 233/7 after they resumed from their overnight score of 180/3. That was until batting all-rounder Rachin Ravindra, whose parents are from Bengaluru, stood firm and brought up his second Test hundred while stitching together an attacking 137-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Tim Southee (65).

With Day 3 of the first Test between India and New Zealand done and dusted, we take a look at some of the records broken and milestones achieved during the day:

— Virat Kohli went past 9,000 runs on the ‘Moving Day’ of the Bengaluru Test with his knock of 70 off 102 deliveries, becoming only the fourth Indian batter to do so after Sachin Tendulkar (15,921), Rahul Dravid (13,265) and Sunil Gavaskar (10,122).

— The hosts struck five sixes during their second innings, with three of them coming off Sarfaraz Khan’s (70 not out) bat. India thus became the first team in Test history to hit 100 sixes in a calendar year. The previous highest was 89 by England in 2022, the year ‘Bazball’ made its debut.

— A total of 453 runs were scored on Day 3 in Bengaluru, the second-most in a single day’s play in a Test on Indian soil. The record currently stands at 470, scored on Day 2 of the third Test between India and Sri Lanka in Mumbai (Brabourne Stadium) with a vast majority of them (443) being scored by the home team.

— The 356-run lead collected by New Zealand after posting 402 in their first innings is the joint-fourth-highest by a visiting team against India in India. West Indies collected a similar lead at the Brabourne Stadium in 1948. West Indies would collect a 490-run lead 10 years later in Kolkata, which sits at the top of the list.

— Rachin Ravindra top-scored for New Zealand with a majestic knock of 134 off 157 balls, bringing up his second Test hundred and scoring the first century by a New Zealander in a Test in India since Ross Taylor in 2012.
