Virat Kohli has shown more faith in fast bowlers, MS Dhoni depended on spin, says Ajit Agarkar

Former fast bowler Ajit Agarkar believes that while India captain Virat Kohli has shown faith in pace attack, recently-retired skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni relied more on spinners. Speaking on Star Sports chat show Cricket Connected, Agarkar said that under Kohli’s captaincy, the Indian cricket team have grown as one of the most potent fast bowling attacks in the world comprising of Jasprit Bumrah, experienced Ishant Sharma and skillful Mohammed Shami, among many others. He added that it is because of India’s fast bowlers that India have started to compete better outside the sub-continent. “Probably this was a stark difference because both had a different way of leading, but both got a lot of success,” he said. Dhoni has on 15 August announced his retirement from international cricket. Under his captaincy, the Indian team has won three ICC titles - 2007 World T20, 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy. On the other hand, under Kohli’s leadership, the team has won the first-ever Test series win in Australia in 2018/19.

“The methods might be different but if you show faith in your players, then you get good results as a captain,” Agarkar added. A day after Dhoni announced his retirement, Kohli expressed his gratitude for the “friendship and belief” that he got from the talismanic senior, and added that Dhoni will always be his captain.
