Mumbai’s Tanush Kotian and Tushar Deshpande made history in Ranji Trophy, batting at No. 10 and No. 11 positions against Baroda on Tuesday at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC in Mumbai. Kotian scored 120 not out, while Deshpande smashed 123 as they together stitched a record partnership of 232 runs for the last wicket to help Mumbai post 569 in their second innings. With their respective centuries, Deshpande and Kotian became the first No. 10 and No. 11 batters to score hundreds together in Ranji trophy history. Overall, they are the second pair to do so in First-Class cricket after Shute Banerjee and Chandu Sarwate who completed the feat while playing for India against Surrey in 1946.
Their 232-run partnership is only one short of the Ranji Trophy record for the last wicket. Ajay Sharma and Maninder Singh hold the record with a 233-run partnership against Bombay in 1991-92, during the semifinal at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Sarwate and Banerjee hold the Indian record with their 249-run stand against Surrey.
Kotian and Deshpande’s partnership ended with the latter getting caught by Shashwat Rawat off Bhargav Bhatt. Deshpande’s score of 123 is the third instance of an Indian batter scoring a hundred from No. 11 spot in First-Class cricket. Deshpande now also holds the record for the highest score for a No.11 Indian batter in First-Class, overtaking Shute Banerjee’s 121.
