Travis Head was the star of the World Cup final for Australia as he single-handedly derailed India’s title push. His impressive 137 off 120 balls made him the third Australian, after Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist, to score a century in a World Cup final. Before his impact with the bat, Head had already played a massive part in India being restricted to 240 on a sluggish track in Ahmedabad. Earlier in the 10th over of India’s innings, he pulled off one of the catches of the tournament to dismiss India’s captain, Rohit Sharma. Ian Smith, in the commentary, declared it as the turning point of the match, despite India still having eight wickets. Rohit Sharma, who has been blazing away at the top of the order, had already taken down Josh Hazlewood, a key Australian bowler. He then went after Glenn Maxwell with consecutive sixes and a boundary in the last over of the powerplay. However, his aggressive approach led to his downfall when he went for a third big shot. He turned the bat and the ball look a leading edge and went up miles in the air, Head, standing at cover, ran back and kept track with the ball, dived backwards and completed a fantastic catch.

This moment was a turning point in the game, as Rohit’s departure severely impacted India’s batting. After his dismissal, India managed only four more fours in the next 40 overs, marking the lowest in a completed 50-over innings in over a decade. It underscored the significance of Rohit’s wicket in the overall context of the match. Speaking about this catch in the post-match ceremony, Head acknowledged Rohit Sharma’s unfortunate situation. “He’s (Rohit Sharma) probably the unluckiest man in the world,” Head said in the post-match ceremony about the Indian captain. “Again, it’s (fielding) something that I worked hard on. I couldn’t imagine getting a hundred, couldn’t probably imagine holding onto that one. Was great to hold on to that catch,” Head further added. Travis Head also expressed satisfaction with the decision of his captain to bowl first after winning the toss. He said that they believed the pitch improved throughout the day. He also mentioned that the pitch displayed some spin, which proved advantageous to Australia.
