Fans faint, several injured as lakhs turn up to attend in Team India's T20 World Cup victory parade

Around 300,000 fans descended on Marine Drive to take part in Team India’s T20 World Cup victory parade, resulting in several getting injured.

India cricket team's victory parade on Marine Drive was attended by 3 lakh lakh fans. AP

Team India’s T20 World Cup victory parade on the Marine Drive created unprecedented scenes as lakhs turned up to witness the Indian cricket team players. As per reports, 300,000 fans descended on Marine Drive to take part in the victory parade. The Mumbai police had deployed 5,000 personnel at Marine Drive and Wankhede stadium to control the crowd and while the event largely went smoothly some of the fans got injured and had trouble breathing. 10 people were taken to the nearest government hospital after complaining of various issues. Two fans were also admitted to the hospital, one had a fracture and the other had trouble breathing, the Mumbai police said.

Team India victory celebration: As it happened

“I was coming from the office and came to know that the Indian team would reach here between 5 pm-6 pm which did not happen. The crowd kept increasing. The police were not managing the situation. People suddenly started shouting, after which some people fell on each other. It was very unorganised. There was nobody to manage. The incident happened between 8:15-8:45 pm,” Ravi Solanki, an eyewitness, told news agency ANI.

The Indian cricket team held the roadshow from Nariman Point to Wankhede Stadium – a one-kilometre stretch – and concluded the day with a felicitation ceremony organised by BCCI at the stadium.

Rishab Mahesh Yadav, a fan who fell unconscious during the victory parade, said, “The crowd was increasing. I fell and got choked. I became unconscious. I was taken to the nearby hospital, where I received treatment. I feel fine now. The crowd was more than necessary. There was mismanagement. The police were also not alert.”

The Wankhede Stadium also had 40,000 fans filling up the stands after the Maharashtra Cricket Association announced free entry for the fans.

During the BCCI event in the stadium, India captain Rohit Sharma dedicated the T20 World Cup win to the “entire nation”.

“The reception we’ve got here tells you the kind of enthusiasm, the kind of wait people had. This trophy is for the entire nation. Along with all the players who have represented the country, the people who have been wanting for us to win the trophy - this trophy belongs to them.

“Mumbai never disappoints when it comes to winning trophies. To bring this trophy back to Wankhede feels very, very special," he said.

“The fans have been waiting for 13 years to see a World Cup triumph, and finally it’s here. I’m very happy and relieved.”
