T20 World Cup 2024: Super 8 scenarios for USA, Pakistan, England, Bangladesh

After 29 matches, five teams have secured a spot in the second round – Super Eights – while eight teams are officially out of contention in the 2024 T20 World Cup. South Africa became the first team to qualify for Super Eights and were soon joined by Australia. India and West Indies booked their spots on Thursday with Afghanistan joining the next stage a day later.

We take a look at each team’s position in the T20I World Cup so far and their qualification chances:

Group A:

India (6 points | 1.137 NRR): India have qualified with three wins from three matches and victory in their last group game against Canada will ensure a finish at the top spot.

United States (4 points | 0.127 NRR): A defeat against India have not impacted their chances much. They can qualify by beating Ireland or even with a single point if the contest gets washed out.

Pakistan (2 points | 0.191 NRR): Pakistan put the first point on the board by beating Canada after losing against the USA and India. The qualification is out of their hands and the Men in Green need to beat Ireland while also hoping that the USA slip up.

Canada (2 points | –0.493 NRR): Canada’s defeat against Pakistan has put them on the brink of elimination. Their only hope is now to win against India and with a big margin so that they can qualify on NRR. They also need the USA and Pakistan to lose against Ireland.

Ireland (0 points | –1.712 NRR): Ireland have two matches left – against the USA and Pakistan – and they are mathematically alive but they need to win them plus other results must favour them as well.

Group B

Australia (6 points | 3.580 NRR): Australia have already qualified with victories against Oman, England and Namibia. A win against Scotland should see them top the group.

Scotland (5 points | 2.164 NRR): Scotland may have already secured a spot in the next round but need to defeat Australia to confirm it. If the Aussies win that one, England will be back in contention.

England (3 point | +3.081 NRR): England gave their chances of qualifying a massive boost with a thumping win against Oman. The convincing win helped the defending champions leapfrog Scotland on net run rate but stay behind on points. A win against Namibia and a loss for Scotland against Australia will  see them through.

Namibia (2 points | –2.098 NRR): Namibia are out after losing to Australia. They can now only reach two points which will not be enough.

Oman (0 points | –3.062 NRR): Oman cannot progress with four consecutive defeats but have shown competitive spirit in their matches, most notably against Australia.

Group C

Afghanistan (6 points | 4.230 NRR): Afghanistan have been impressive and with their third straight win, against Papua New Guinea, they joined West Indies in moving forward.

West Indies (6 points | 2.596 NRR): West Indies qualified for Super 8s after their win over New Zealand.

Uganda (2 points | –4.217 NRR): Uganda head out of the tournament with a win to show for it but qualifying from such a tough group was always difficult.

Papua New Guinea (0 points | –0.886 NRR): PNG lost to Afghanistan in their third group clash and will not be going ahead.

New Zealand (0 points | –2.425 NRR): Afghanistan’s win against PNG has sent winless New Zealand crashing after just two games. Defeats against Afghanistan and West Indies to begin with didn’t help their cause to begin with.

Group D

South Africa (6 points | 0.603 NRR): The Proteas qualified for Super 8s after Sri Lanka’s match against Nepal was washed out. Only one more team can reach six points in Group D now. South Africa have won all three matches so far – against Sri Lanka, Netherlands and Bangladesh.

Bangladesh (4 points | 0.478 NRR): Bangladesh are on the brink of moving forward after their win against the Netherlands. Win against Sri Lanka, but loss to South Africa, haven’t deterred them.

Netherlands (2 points | -0.408 NRR): The Dutch once again gave South Africa a scare but fell short in the end and loss to Bangladesh hurt their chances of qualifying. With one win from three matches, the Dutch need a comprehensive win against Nepal to overhaul Bangladesh and for the Tigers to stumble as well.

Nepal (1 point | –0.539 NRR): Nepal, who were beaten by the Netherlands, had their second match against Sri Lanka washed out. Their best chance is to win the remaining matches to stand a chance but it needs looks slim.

Sri Lanka (1 point | –0.777 NRR): Sri Lanka’s match against Nepal was washed out and the Lions have just one game left. This means they can reach a maximum of three points. However it won’t be enough to move forward.
