Here’s how Group 2 teams remained after all four teams played each of their three matches.

South Africa (into the semi-finals): South Africa went unbeaten through the group stage and then in the first two games in the Super Eight but needed a win over West Indies to be assured of semi-final path. A victory against the Men in Maroon ensured that Proteas not only qualified for the knockouts but also topped their group during the Super Eight phase.

England (into the semi-finals): A win over co-hosts USA in their final Super Eight contest saw the defending champions reach the semifinals. Chris Jordan took a hat-trick, England’s first in men’s T20Is, as USA were dismissed cheaply. The reigning champions then romped home with ease. To think Jos Butler’s team were almost heading home a fortnight ago.

West Indies (knocked out): West Indies produced some exceptional performances and provided plenty of joy to their home fans but losses to England and South Africa in the Super Eight proved costly. Defeat to South Africa meant that they couldn’t qualify for the knockouts.

USA (knocked out): Going into the last round of fixtures in the Super Eight, co-hosts USA had mathematical chance of going ahead but needed results elsewhere to go their way. But first step towards that goal was needing a comfortable win against England. Alas, England won by 10-wickets against the USA to render all permutations useless.
