India won their first World Cup in 13 years and first ICC trophy in 11 years by beating South Africa by seven runs in the T20 World Cup final at Bridgetown in Barbados on Saturday (29 June). In the process, India went unbeaten to win their first T20 World Cup title in 17 years.
In the title clash, India stopped South Africa short on 169/8 in dramatic and thrilling fashion. Quinton de Kock (39), Tristan Stubbs (31) and Henrich Klaasen (52) were among the runs for the Proteas but Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah applied the brakes late on to turn the match around for India as Proteas looked to chase 177 runs.
Earlier, Virat Kohli regained his form in the final to pick up the pieces for the Men in Blue who lost three early wickets.
Kohli’s 76 (59b, 6x4, 2x6), his first fifty in the tournament, and Axar Patel’s 47 (31b, 1x4, 4x6) helped India overcome the early fall of skipper Rohit Sharma (9), Rishabh Pant (0) and Suryakumar Yadav (3).
India were at a wobbly 34/3 then. But Kohli and Axar milked 72 runs for the fourth wicket. Shivam Dube gave some late steam with a 16-ball 27.
