David Wiese’s all-round contribution propelled Namibia to the first Super Over win of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, against Oman at the Kensington Oval on Monday. The Group B match at Barbados needed a Super Over after it finished as a tie.

In the Super Over, Namibia batted first as Wiese hit a six and four off left-arm fast bowler Bilal Khan while Gerhard Erasmus finished with two back-to-back fours to help the African team score 21. In reply, Oman could only manage 10 runs as Wiese bowled a brilliant over and took the wicket of Naseem Khushi.

“Lost a couple of years tonight, don’t know how many I have left in me now. Just been that kind of an emotionally draining game,” Player of the Match Wiese said after guiding his team to a win. “(On his Super Over bowling) I had a feel for the wicket and knew what I had to execute in the Super Over. The pitch was difficult, was a bit two-paced and different to what we expected. I think we adapted well and it was surely a pitch where you had to spend some time out there.”

Earlier, Oman were bowled out for 109 in 19.4 overs in the first innings of the match. After losing the first three wickets for just 10 runs, Zeeshan Maqsood and Khalid Kail scored 22 and 34 respectively to script Oman’s comeback. But the failure of other batters resulted in Oman finishing on a below-par score. Left-arm pacer Ruben Trumpelmann took four wickets for Namibia while Wiese scalped three wickets.

In reply, Namibia lost opener Michael van Lingen on the second delivery of their innings but Nikolaas Davin (24) and Jan Frylinck (45) steadied the innings and scored the bulk of the runs. Namibia, however, kept losing wickets regularly and needed five from the last over to win their opener when Mehran Khan bowled a brilliant over, taking wickets of Frylinck and Zane Green and giving away just four runs to force a Super Over.

Pacer Mehran, who finished the match with bowling figures of 3/7 from three overs, was expected to bowl in the Super Over as well but Oman’s decision to go with experienced Bilal backfired.
