 "T20 World Cup 2024: Rashid Khan to lead as Afghanistan announce 15-member squad")
Afghanistan have announced their 15-player squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 with Rashid Khan as their captain. The squad does not include Hashmatullah Shahidi, who captained the team at the ODI World Cup 2023, while Karim Janat, Mohammad Ishaq, and Noor Ahmad were added after missing the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Other youngsters to find a place in the squad were Nangyal Kharoti and Mohammad Ishaq. Left-arm spinner Kharoti made his international debut earlier this year against Ireland and took five wickets in the three matches at an economy rate of 5.90.
Wicketkeeper-batter Ishaq was part of Afghanistan’s squad in the 2020 and 2022 U19 Cricket World Cups.
There are only four batters in the squad – Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Najibullah Zadran and Ishaq – however there are several all-rounders including Rashid, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Karim Janat and Kharote.
The other spinners in the squad are Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Noor Ahmad.
The pace lineup includes Naveen-ul-Haq, Fareed Ahmad and Fazalhaq Farooq.
Afghanistan, who are part of Group C, face off against Uganda in their first match on 3 June. Other teams in Group C are New Zealand, West Indies and Papua New Guinea.
