Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Wednesday registered the highest-ever total in IPL history, after they posted 277/3 from 20 overs against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Uppal. The previous all-time record total was set by Royal Challengers Bengaluru, when they had posted 263/5 against the now defunct Pune Warriors India in 2013. SRH’s previous best IPL total was 231/2 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Hyderabad in 2019.
On Wednesday, SRH were off to an aggressive start with Travis Head (62) and Mayank Agarwal (11) forging a 45-run stand for the first wicket. Head then forged a 68-run stand with Abhishek Sharma for the second wicket. Travis Head, playing his first match for SRH, got to his fifty in just 18 deliveries. He eventually registered the fastest fifty by an SRH batter, only for that to be surpassed by Abhishek Sharma a few minutes later, who reached the milestone in just 16 deliveries.
Once Head and Abhishek were dismissed, Heinrich Klaasen joined the party. Klaasen got to his half century in 23 deliveries, hitting one four and five sixes in the process. Hardik Pandya, Gerald Coetzee and Piyush Chawla got one wicket each. Debtutant Kwena Maphaka was the most expensive, after having registered figures of 0/66 from four overs.
Mumbai Indians, led by Hardik Pandya, began the tournament with a six-wicket defeat to Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, and unless they can create a miracle, MI seem to be staring at a second consecutive defeat this season.
