SA vs AFG LIVE Score: Aiden Markram speaks after reaching historic final

Aiden Markram: “It feels good. It’s not only the captain that gets you in the final, it is a massive squad effort. Plenty of guys behind the scenes as well. Fortunate to have lost the toss, we would have batted too. We were brilliant with the ball, got it in the right areas and kept it really simple. The bowlers have been incredible for us. It was challenging with the bat, no batter is going to lie and tell you it was easy out there. We had a bit of luck and then got a bit of a partnership. We have had a few close games and a few people back home would have woken up early with more grey hairs. Glad today was a bit more comforting.”

On the final: “It is one more step for us, it is an opportunity we have never had, nothing to be scared of. This win means a lot, we have some world class players in the side but like I said, it takes a whole squad to be able to deliver such a performance.”

SA vs AFG LIVE Score: Rashid Khan speaks after heartbreaking loss

Rashid Khan: “It was tough, tough for us as a team. We might have done better but the conditions didn’t allow us to do what we wanted. That’s how T20 cricket is, you need to be ready for all conditions. I think they bowled really well. I think we got good success in this tournament because the seamers bowled really well, you need good starts. I think we were unlucky with Mujeeb’s injury, but our seamers and even Nabi bowled brilliantly with the new ball. That made our job easier as spinners. We have enjoyed this tournament.”

“We will accept playing a semi-final and losing to a top side like Africa. It is just the beginning for us, we have the confidence and belief to beat any side. We just need to keep our processes. This has been a great learning experience for us. What we take from the competition is the belief. We know we have the skills, it is just about managing tough situations, pressure situations. Some work to be done, specially in the middle order to take the innings deep. As I said, it is always learning for our team and we have achieved good results so far but we come back doing more hard work, specially in the batting department.”

SA vs AFG LIVE Score: South Africa break the jinx

South Africa have broken the semi-finals jinx to reach the final of a men’s World Cup. A historic day and what a performance in the semi-final. A forgetful day for Afghanistan. Afghanistan hit back by removing Quinton de Kock early on but Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram held onto their nerves to finish the job in just 8.5 overs.

South Africa vs Afghanistan Highlights, T20 World Cup Semi-Final 1: South Africa storm into their first men’s World Cup final with a comprehensive nine-wicket win over Afghanistan. The 57-run chase was completed in under nine overs.

South Africa vs Afghanistan, T20 World Cup 2024 Semi-final 1, Preview: South Africa and Afghanistan will be hoping to make history on Wednesday, or early Thursday morning if you’re in India, in the first semi-final of the 2024 T20 World Cup at the Brian Lara Stadium  in Tarouba, Trinidad and Tobago.

The ICC’s showpiece T20 event will have a first-time finalist after all in the form of the winner of the upcoming clash. Afghanistan had narrowly missed out on the semi-finals of last year’s ODI World Cup despite defeating England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and nearly beating Australia.

With their 84-run hammering of New Zealand in the group stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup along with their 21-run victory over Australia and 8-run victory over Bangladesh in the Super 8s, Rashid Khan’s men have finally achieved their dream of playing World Cup knockouts — a little over a decade after making their first appearance in a major ICC event.

Qualifying for the summit clash will be just as historic for the Proteas if not more, after their long history of World Cup heartbreaks. While South Africa did win the inaugural Champions Trophy (then called KnockOut Tournament) the fact that a team of their calibre is yet to make an appearance in a World Cup final, let alone win one, is what has stumped many a cricket follower.

South Africa have the upper hand entering Wednesday’s clash given they are one of the only two teams still unbeaten in the tournament — along with India. Given the unpredictability of the format as well as Afghanistan’s reputation as giant-killers, their unbeaten run is bit a slight advantage.

It’s also worth noting that while Afghanistan have registered comprehensive victories over teams such as New Zealand, a majority of South Africa’s victories have been nervy affairs where they needed an extraordinary performance or two to stave off defeat.

Squads:

South Africa: Quinton de Kock (wk), Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram (c), Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi, Ottneil Baartman, Gerald Coetzee, Bjorn Fortuin, Ryan Rickelton

Afghanistan: Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Ibrahim Zadran, Azmatullah Omarzai, Gulbadin Naib, Mohammad Nabi, Karim Janat, Rashid Khan (c), Nangeyalia Kharote, Noor Ahmad, Naveen-ul-Haq, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Najibullah Zadran, Fareed Ahmad Malik, Hazratullah Zazai, Mohammad Ishaq
