Just a few days after making a controversial “stray incident” remark, former India cricketer Sourav Ganguly will join the protestors on the streets on Wednesday with his wife to protest against the rape-murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. Apart from this, the former BCCI president will also join his wife’s dance school protests in the evening.
On Monday, Ganguly had switched his display picture on social media handles to black, in line with several others who had done so in support of the deceased doctor, who used to work at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
However, he received criticism for changing his picture to an all-black image, with some even terming it as a “superficial response”. Some of them also wanted an apology from Ganguly for the statement.
“Everything should not be judged based on a stray incident,” Ganguly had said, defending the Mamata Banerjee government on the incident.
“I don’t think everything should be judged on a stary incident. There is no room to think that everything or everyone is not safe in the state. Such accidents happen all over the world. It is wrong to think that girls are not safe. Not only in West Bengal, but everywhere in India, women are safe. Where we live is the best place. One should not judge by one incident," he had added.
Ganguly, however, provided clarification on the statement, saying: “I don’t know how what I said last Sunday was construed or interpreted. I have said it earlier as well that (the crime) it’s a terrible thing. Now the CBI (and the) police are investigating the matter. It’s very shameful what has happened.”
